    Working out
Luke and I joined the gym a few months back and we have started to loose a little weight. Luke has really started to bulk up with his workout and I have just tried to get to the gym on a regular basis.

I've realized that I'm not the type of person that can go the the gym and do a workout on my own. I need a class or someone there to make me want to stay around for more then 5 min. So this week I decided to take a class. Something I thought would be easy and work up to something a little more challenging.

Monday 9:15 I jump into the pool and start my water class. Oh yeah me and 15 other old ladies ranging from 50 - 65 in age. Half of them didn't even do anything. They just stood there in places bouncing up and down. Well I left the gym thinking that was ok but not worth getting up at 8:30. Then it hit me about 3 hours later. My body was so sore, but that good sore like I did something productive. Then I was so hungry I was eating everything. LOL.. So the next day Jason and Jeff went with me to the deep water class and that was even harder.

We will see what happens in the next week or so.

This photo was taken in DC on April 23rd.

    OMG California
It's about f-in time. I have good friends who were hitched in those crazy heady days when you could do it for five minutes in San Francisco. God only knows what the voters will do this November. But man, this is very, very sweet. Congrats to everyone fighting the good fight in California!

Writer's Block: What? Everyone Doesn't Like Me?

Why do you think it is some people don't get along with you?

I generally tell it like it is. I have a hard time blowing smoke up people's asses to make them happy. You either like me or you don't, I couldn't care less either way.

    A Good Trooper

    almost sick day 2

Yesterday it was tough packing up and going to work because i really felt like crap. If it wasn't such my team's big day on the conversion, i might have begged off and stayed in bed. Alas, i was a good trooper and headed in. The day went good. A couple of glitches here and there - ain't that always the case? - but everything went in smooth and we brought that train into the station right on time. We finally wrapped the last major piece for our group about 7:30 and then headed on out. On the way home from the office, i stopped at Walgreens to get a pint of Moose Tracks ice cream and a bottle of NyQuil for desert. i needed some ice in my bucket to keep my ice cream solid until i was ready. After dinner - a Quiznos sandwich - i ate my ice cream, took a big chug off my bottle of NyQuil and climbed into bed with my laptop to read LJs. Within 15 minutes, i had to set it to the side and turn off the light just as "Boston Legal" was starting. Good thing i set the sleep timer on the TV because the last thing i remember was William Shatner saying: "Denny Crannnnne".

OK, so the snake hook is coming and trouble awaits me. WooT!

Where is everyone staying in Montreal? We're in a B&B style loft hotel in the Latin quarter that should be about a 10 minute walk from the venue and is near all the good stuff on Ste Laurant. It's nice, but not ideal for afterparties.

    Random note:

An organizer is in from NYC who looks like the rapper T.I. - plus about a foot and 70 pounds.

When I saw him, I blurted out "we're getting serious up in here," but of course they took it as the typical Union Organizer "getting amped" talk.

    Fight Like a Legend!
It's been a while since I mentioned Æternal Legends. Fortunately, that can change now. Our first supplement, Fight Like a Legend, is out right now as a PDF for just $3.25. For folks in the UK, that's about £1.70. That's less than my bus fare to and from work, and believe me this is a hell of a lot more fun.

I didn't have a hand in Fight Like a Legend. It's all [info]eyebeams' work, which makes sense: Æternal Legends uses the R2R system, and R2R is his baby. Nobody's better qualified to deconstruct and reconstruct combat.

This is just the first release of a range of short supplements that focus on making the game feel like it's yours. Next up is The Ties That Bind, an introductory adventure originally run at Conpulsion 2008 that comes complete with pre-generated characters and a fleshed-out setting. After that, we've got a book on modifying Sphere mechanics and even more.

If there's part of the game that you think could benefit from a supplement, let me know in a comment below!

    In Both Hands

My parents came into town today so I could give my father a massage.

This morning I watched the documentary The Bridge, about some of the people who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004. 24 people jumped from the bridge in that year, and this movie not only shows them on film jumping, but interviews the friends and family members of the jumpers.

The movie has some beautiful and dramatic footage of the bridge itself, too. The filmmaker spent the whole year photographing the bridge, and he captured about half of the people who jumped.

The interviews are a mixed bag, with some very thoughtful comments by people, and an interview with a 19-year old jump survivor. The first thought he had upon jumping was I want to live. He maneuvered his body around to land feet-first, and survived with two shattered vertebrae.

This movie could have been so much more than it is, but still, it’s worth seeing to listen to a few of the interviewees discuss their loved ones. It’s amazing just how well many of them were able to see the suicide coming, and also to realize that there wasn’t anything they could truly do to stop it. Postpone, yes. Stop, no.

So, it was with that movie on my mind that I went downtown to my studio to meet my parents, who had taken the train from Sacramento for me to give my father a massage. He’s 77 years old, and rides in an electric chair much of the time.

Working on him really allowed me to look at his body for the first time in a long time. Really look at him in a way that wasn’t about him being my father. And yet, of course, one isn’t really able to completely detach from the fact of one’s parentage. My father was a very vigorous man in his prime, tall and strong and handsome. He was (and is) full of the lore of woodcraft, and electronics, and many things.

But working on him also revealed the fact that his mortality is much nearer to him than I would have otherwise acknowledged.

Yet also, seeing my parents interact as a couple of 45 years is a bit overwhelming psychically. It’s like they don’t have the energy left to argue as passionately as they did when they were young, but they still cast bolts at each other nonetheless. I enjoy my parents individually, but when they are together, it’s nearly more than I can take.

So, I did some extremely gentle deep work. Gentle because of his existing health conditions - that combined with papery old person skin necessitated it. One thing I did do, though, was make sure that his skin was well oiled. I couldn’t risk tear it at all, and old skin sucks up massage lubricant like a parched desert.

After the session, he felt better, and I was happy for them to go back on the train to Sacramento.

There’s more to write of the day, but the low mood set by the movie and grasping my father’s mortality in my hands is enough for now.

    Time to Pretend
Shadows and twins, they seem like one in the same. We couldn't severe if we spent eternity trying. Know that I need you, and I appreciate you more than I could ever let on. We all have the families we were born into, and the families that we choose, and I live for the latter. I exhale all my secrets with ease into your ear, and I can always feel the smile I get in return, with the advice I always need. Gratitude can't even begin to contain the emotion, and this broken record will keep on repeating.

Now to make a shadow out of a ghost. With time, with time, and patience ample and swelling. I could ask myself "Oh, god! What have I gotten myself into?" and maybe I have, but I want it more than I ever couldn't. It's hard to see through the fog. I spent hours this morning hiding under my sheets (a habit that once was nightly, then disappeared, and has come back in full effect) sliping in and out of sleep, in and out of dreams. I was frustrated with all the thought I hadp been giving him, thought I was giving up control. But that really isn't the case here, and if it is, what's so bad about it? It's absolutely necessary, it's all part of the gamble. I guess I had just forgotten, I guess I'm not all too different.

I'm re-learning, and learning all the same. I'm stimulated, and that would have to be the point. No one else does it for me, or has done it for me, either in a long while, or quite possibly ever, at least to this effect.

I'll start laying brick soon. I won't cut my nails. I'll keep stumbling through thought and fantasy, wonder and doubt, hope and excitement. I'll be the stars just out of reach, and the framework and foundation. I'll be everything you could never find, standing outside your window. I'll make all your years count for something.

Anything worth having is worth fighting for, maybe even worth suffering for, but that could be reserved for masochists like me. I'll keep silence where needed, and that's all you'll need to know. I'll tell all where welcomed, because you already know your worth.

    Free Southern Fried Chicken Sandwiches
(I don't know if this is happening all over the country or just around here, but it's worth checking out.) McDonald's is giving away their new southern fried chicken biscuit for breakfast and sandwich after breakfast is over (you have to purchase a drink) on Thursday, May 15.

I'm not McDonald's hugest fan, but this sandwich is the closest I've tasted to a Chik-fil-a chicken sandwich. The only difference seems to be the McDonald's sandwich does not taste like it has been marinated in the blood of the lamb.

    Well...owww!
I started running again on Sunday afternoon. Whew! The old bones are achin' like they're crying out for the grave. Though I've been very disciplined about getting to the gym at least 5 times per week since spring (and the threat of swimsuit season) hit, nothing prepared me for the strenuousness of getting back to pushing myself to the brink of extinction (or was that dancing at Ceremony on Monday? Either way, a workout...is a workout!)

Some days I'm 124, others 128, but usually between 125-126 lbs. Goal weight is 114. And phooey to the guys out there who are intimidated by women who are into strength training and bodybuilding. I look DAMN good in a muscle shirt now. And I can do pushups! Okay, that hasn't happened since 3rd grade gymnastics class.

The most important thing is that I'm feeling good. Energized, motivated, excellent self-esteem, and I'm challenging myself more every day. Anyone up for working out, or going running or hiking, shoot me an email. Generally not around on the weekends, but mornings are good.
